Rebel Assault demo
Rebel Assault is a highly-advanced action-arcade game that takes advantage of the sophisticated capabilities of your Macintosh computer. Because the demo pushes your computer's technology to the limit, other applications or extensions already installed on your hard drive may prevent Rebel Assault from performing at its best. If you encounter difficulties while running the demo, chances are you'll find a solution in this Read Me document.

Can I run Rebel Assault while using virtual memory?
No. In order for the game to run properly, Rebel Assault must be run using real memory only.
It's hard to fly the ship with a mouse. What's up with the controls?

I have hardware connected to my machine that was not made by Apple. Will this hardware conflict with Rebel Assault?

The music disappeared after I paused, then restarted the game. What happened?

• Shutting down other applications
The "Shut Down Other Applications" option in the Game Options screen will attempt to shut down all other applications, including the Finder, whenever you play Rebel Assault. Doing so allows the game to run more smoothly, without needing to pause periodically for the other applications.
When you quit from Rebel Assault, you will always be returned to the Finder.
Since some applications may not allow themselves to be automatically shut down, it is always a good idea to quit from all other applications before running Rebel Assault.
• Shutting down control panels/extensions
Various software programs installed on your machine may interrupt your computer while you're playing Rebel Assault. If you notice intermittent pauses during gameplay, you may be encountering this problem.
In your System Folder, there are two folders called "Control Panels" and "Extensions" that house many small applications that eat up memory. These applications may also conflict with the game. Create a new folder called "Disabled." Drag any unnecessary extensions or control panels (ex. Modem, Printer, QuickTime, File Sharing, ATM, etc.) into this folder and then restart your computer. DO NOT move any items that enable your CD-ROM drive to run. Consult your computer documentation for more information. When you have finished playing Rebel Assault, simply drag the disabled items back into your System Folder and restart your machine.
If this solution does not fix the problem, the access time on your CD-ROM drive may not be fast enough to play Rebel Assault at the optimum speed. Please consult your hardware dealer for more information.
If Rebel Assault simply runs slowly but smoothly, experiment with smaller window sizes or different video options in your game menus.
• Low Memory
Normally, Rebel Assault requires 2400K of free memory to run. However, if you have barely enough memory, or not quite enough, you have two options:
1. It is possible to run in only 2100K, with one condition: you must use "Direct Screen Blast" mode (most likely, you would use this mode anyway). Here's what to do:
Copy the "Rebel Assault" program icon from the CD onto your hard drive. You may put it anywhere you like on your drive. Select it by clicking once, and choose "Get Info..." from the "File" menu. You will notice that the minimum size and preferred size are 2400K. Change them both to 2100K (Note: the system software will advise against doing this; however, you may safely disregard this warning). Close the information window. You are ready to play.
2. Shut down extensions and control panels. In your System Folder, there are two folders called "Control Panels" and "Extensions" that house many small applications that eat up memory. Create a new folder called "Disabled". Drag any unnecessary extensions or control panels (ex. QuickTime, File Sharing, ATM, etc.) into this folder and then restart your computer. Do not move any items that enable your CD-ROM drive to run. Consult your computer documentation for more information. When you have finished playing Rebel Assault, simply drag the disabled items back into your System Folder and restart your machine.
Note: if you are playing the demo under extremely low memory conditions, you may have to restart your computer after quitting.
• CD Speed
With some CD-ROM drives, you may find that Rebel Assault plays more smoothly if you copy the "Rebel Assault" application to your hard drive and run it from there.
If the CD-ROM drive you are using has a slow access time, you may encounter slowdowns during the demo. Unfortunately, this is a limitation of the drive. Please consult your hardware dealer for more information.
• Mouse control
If you do not have a joystick, you may find that you prefer keyboard control over mouse control on a few of the game levels.
The Mouse control panel in your system folder contains a "Mouse Tracking" control. Try setting this to one of the slower settings to improve control when using the mouse.
• Joysticks
If you choose to use a joystick while playing Rebel Assault, you have a wide range of choices. The joysticks supported by the demo are:

*Mac GamePad* Copy the included Rebel Assault GamePad set from the Joysticks folder on the Rebel Assault Demo CD-ROM into the GamePad sets folder in your system folder. Open the GamePad control panel, select the Rebel Assault set, and drag the selection to the image of the gamepad you are using. (NOTE: In the game options menu of Rebel Assault you should set your control option to keyboard rather than joystick.)
*MouseStick II* Copy the included Rebel Assault MouseStick set from the Joysticks folder on the Rebel Assault Demo CD-ROM into the MouseStick sets folder in your system folder. Open the MouseStick II control panel, select the Rebel Assault set, and drag the selection to the image of the joystick you are using.
*Flightstick Pro* Open the Flightstick Pro control panel and select the "Im-/Export" button. Press "Open..." and open the file "Rebel Assault FP" from the Joysticks folder on the Rebel Assault Demo CD-ROM. Select the Rebel Assault setting in the right side window and press "<<<Import<<<". Press "Done" when you have completed this. (NOTE: On some computer configurations the Flightstick Pro software may not automatically load the correct setting when running Rebel Assault from the CD-ROM. If you should experience this problem, please copy the Rebel Assault application to your hard drive and run it from there).
*QueStick* Open the QueStick control panel and go the configure menu. Select the import button and choose the file "Rebel Assault Que" from the Joysticks folder on the Rebel Assault Demo CD-ROM.
*Mark I FCS* Copy the strokes set "Rebel Assault" from the Joysticks folder on the Rebel Assault Demo CD-ROM into your ThrustMaster Strokes Sets folder (located in the Preferences folder of your system folder).
For any joystick not listed here, check the instructions that came with the joystick. If the joystick supports cursor movement, then you should be able to use it with Rebel Assault. To set your joystick for play in Rebel Assault, configure your joystick using the software that came with it, so that centering the joystick centers the cursor on the screen, and the joystick is able to move the cursor over the full range of the screen (This is often referred to as, "Absolute Mode").
Computer-specific problems:
• PowerBooks
Some PowerBook computers require extra system extensions which take up so much memory that even with 4 megabytes installed, there may not be 2.4 megabytes free to run Rebel Assault. The solution to this is to add memory, find a way to minimize the memory space taken by extensions, or see the "Low Memory" note, above.
• Performas
Various software programs installed on your Performa may interrupt your computer while you're playing Rebel Assault. If you notice intermittent pauses during gameplay, you may be encountering this problem. If your Performa came with an installed modem package, you will need to move the modem control panel to a folder entitled "Disabled."

• Third-Party Hardware
Rebel Assault is compatible with standard Apple hardware and system software available at the time the game was shipped. If you are using other hardware or software made by third-party developers, there is a chance these products will affect gameplay in Rebel Assault. If you encounter any problems that the other suggestions in this document do not seem to fix, try disabling the control panel or extension that comes with the third-party product. For instance, if you have a video card that was not made by Apple (such as E-machines), you should disable the control panel that ships with this card. Please consult "Shutting down control panels/extensions."
•Miscellaneous
At certain times during gameplay, if you pause or go into one of the configure screens, the music may temporarily disappear. Do not be alarmed; the music will return when you reach the next section.
